Smithers comes out as gay on The Simpsons

After many years of hinting, Smithers has finally show up out of the closet.

In an episode called The Burns Cage, he enlists the assist of Homer to help him discover a date.

He also uses gay internet dating app Grindr to search for a suitable match.

The storyline's been welcomed by some fans on Twitter.

Youtuber Lukus Wilson wrote: "SMITHERS IS COMING OUT! #SmithersComingOut #ProudOfSmithers", external

Matt gave it a Mr Burns approach seal of approval: "Smithers has finally come out as gay on the Simpsons.... Ha excellentttt", external

But others, while still happy, are less than surprised:

Cynthia tweeted: "Since when was it a secret that Mr Smithers was gay??", external

Ryan claimed to have always known: "So The Simpsons have made Smithers Gay. Always knew that character was gay lol", external

Writer Rob LaZebnik claims the episode was inspired by his son, who is also gay.

‘Simpsons’ Character Smithers to Show up Out as Gay in New Episode

After 27 seasons of not-so-subtle hints on The Simpsons, longtime Springfield resident Waylon Smithers Jr. will finally come out and reveal to viewers he is gay in an episode inspired by a Simpsons writer’s relationship with his gay son.

In the episode, titled “The Burns Cage” and set to premiere Sunday, Smithers finally comes to terms that his unrequited love for his boss C. Montgomery Burns will never be reciprocated, so Homer Simpson goes in search of a better match for his supervisor. “We didn’t really want to contain that big moment of ‘I’m out,’ you know?” Simpsons writer Rob LaZebnik told the New York Post. “Instead, just have it be a big hug — like everyone knows it.”

LaZebnik’s son Johnny came out while still in high school. “I am a Midwestern guy, so I don’t tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I thought, ‘What better way to tell my son I love him than to write a cartoon about it?'” LaZebnik said, adding that he originally pitched Smithers’ coming out storyline

Gay Smither is the mother of Laura Smither. Laura was abducted and murdered in Texas on April 3, 1997. Laura was an intelligent, beautiful, mild, loving child with a passion for ballet and a great joy for life. She was 12 years ancient. Laura was violently taken from her life while she was jogging adjacent her home that terrible spring morning. A massive nationwide community search for her resulted. More than 6,000 volunteers helped the Smither family search for Laura and her remains were tragically recovered after 17 days. No attack has ever been made in her case.

The Laura Recovery Center exists to prevent abductions and runaways and to recover missing children by fostering a Triangle of Trust among commandment enforcement, community and a missing child's family. It has an extensive abduction prevention education program and trains regulation enforcement in astate certified child abduction first responder course. The LRC organizes community searches and trains local volunteers to continue the search for their missing child. Lgbtq+ serves as President of the Board of Directors and is one of the speakers for the Fo
