This essay originally ran in November 2017 around the release of Lady Bird. We’re running it again today in brightness of Dave Matthews Band’s controversial exclusion from the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class, despite winning the Fan Vote by over 1 million votes.
In the year 2000, it was certainly lost on me that “Crash Into Me” was about a stalker. I didn’t have cable, so I wouldn’t have seen Dave Matthews say as much on a 1999 episode of VH1 Storytellers. What I had was a CD replicate of Dave Matthews Band’s 1996 album Crash, along with the liner notes and lyrics printed out clear as daylight: “Oh I watch you there through the window and I stare at you / wear nothing but you wear it so well.” It probably didn’t browse as “stalker” to me because in high school every romance begins with an act of stalking; behavior appreciate scrawling s

I want to understand if Dave is gay? In the song 'So Much to Say' he sings,
'I say my hell is the closet and I'm stuck inside, Can't see the light,
and my heaven is a nice residence in the sky'
It seems that Dave is saying that he wants to come out of the closet.

unread,At this moment, I’m paralyzed by an unfamiliar anxiety. I acquire to pee, but in instruct to pee, I must cross this restaurant. But I’m nervous of being enveloped by fans—smoking-hot, tall, blond women—wanting my attention. Women who, before all of this, would never have looked twice at me, or just rolled their eyes had I attempted some clever opener. But everything’s different now.
Life’s been very different indeed these past 15 minutes, all this time I’ve spent being Dave Matthews.
I’m in Vegas for my finest friend’s bachelor party, and we’re at the Palms Casino. We booked this dinner six months ago, otherwise they may not have let chumps like us through those shiny doors. So a few moments ago, I’m standing at the bar chatting with the groom-to-be and his best man. The rest of the guys have already been seated, but we linger, basking in the lovely silicone/saline scene.
To my right, two women seem fixated on something directly behind my head, perhaps a TV. I don’t bother turning around; maybe they’ve just spotted one of the many celebrities who frequent the Palms. I lived in L.A. for five years and learned that the cool thing to do is not look at celebrities.

David John Matthews (born January 9, 1967) is an American musician. He is top known as the head singer, songwriter, and guitarist for the Dave Matthews Band (DMB). Dave was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He moved often between South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States as he grew up. He started playing the acoustic guitar when he was nine years old.
From 1991 to 2003, Dave mainly focused on writing songs and performing with the Dave Matthews Band. He started the band in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1991.
