That's gay [synonym]
... finding alternatives for 'that's gay' could be useful in diminishing the phrase's prevalence...
Campy is not precise enough... by definition: "providing sophisticated amusement by virtue of having artificially (and vulgarly) mannered or banal or sentimental qualities." Using the phrase 'that is gay' in my context denotes something that isn't amusing or laughable, but strange in an uncomfortable way, and perhaps slightly prosaic.

How about whack? (Just a wild guess.)
By the way, are you looking for a word that would be comprehensible to all English speakers, just Americans, just Californians ... ?Click to expand...
'Whack' is definitely suitable in the 'that sucks' context (eg. a friend tells you about their misfortune, and you reply with 'that's gay').
As far as comprehension, I was initially thinking more along the lines of how an academic writer would transmit the same meaning (using lexicon with higher dignity), but I guess any conventional synonyms are welcome.
Gays: Do You Find "Gay" as a Synonym for "Lame" Offensive?

Back in The Diurnal, whenever I or my friends would find something not to our liking, it was perfectly reasonable to speak it was “gay.” As in, “Ghostbusters 2 was homosexual, don’t see it.” Or, “I got a parking ticket for parking in the teacher parking lot. That’s gay.”
Of course, this was the 80’s and the whole gay-tolerance thing wasn’t really that much of a thing (at least, among my peer group of teens in pivotal Illinois), and attitudes have changed.
Of course, the usage still goes on. Ferinstance, on a recent episode of Family Guy a ethics expressed disdain for a situation by saying “Well that’s gay.”
So what’s the deal nowadays? Undertake gays generally regard this as a bad thing, or is it understood as a relic of older slang?
FWIW, a gay ally in my fantasy football league will himself say things like “I ruined last weekend because of Cutler’s interceptions. That’s gay.”
Poll to follow.

I didn’t vote because I’m not gay, but I think its indisputably a slur. I don’t use it for that reason. There are other words I can use that attend the same (or, better,
