My identify is Gabriel and I’m gay.
That statement would have terrified me three years ago – I used to avoid using the word ‘gay’ just in case my subconscious put ‘I am’ before it.
I’d panic on family holidays that I would converse in my sleep and out myself.
The idea of ‘coming out’ plagued me with anxiety and guilt. But look, I just did it! Fifty-nine words ago I came out to you.
It didn’t make me feel anxious, guilty, or terrified.
The idea that those words would be obtainable to readers on this scale would have been my worst nightmare. Now it’s a pleasure and, more importantly, a responsibility.
Why did I feel guilt for being gay? I hadn’t done anything wrong. I had, however, been at school during and just after Section 28 (which made it illegal to ‘promote’ homosexuality in schools).
I sat in classrooms while people debated male lover marriage. I even remember in primary school being told not to use the word gay.
It’s no wonder I felt ashamed, my identity and rights were being debated and I was too scared to speak up in case someone figured it out.

HOLLYOAKS’ new Ollie Morgan actor Gabriel Clark has told fans he's male lover and ‘proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community’.
The new addition to the Channel 4 soap was commended by fans of the show for his revelation.

Gabriel replaces Aedan Duckworth in the role of Ollie after he left the soap suddenly earlier this year.
When asked if he was part of the Gay community during a recent Instagram Q&A, Gabriel said: “ I am. I am really confident to be.”
The star, who is still studying at university while starring in the soap, then posted on Twitter: "I love my job SO much, thank you to everyone who've sent such lovely messages over this last month!
"There's so much drama to come and I'm so excited to bring it to screen and confident to be part of such an amazing cast!
